Long AI Chats: Keep the Useful Context, Leave the Rest

A long conversation can feel reassuring. Everything is in there somewhere.

This Short asks whether that growing pile of context is still helping. I refer to older-model benchmark results and use approximate token counts as a practical handoff rule. Those figures are not an official limit, and they do not predict a fixed quality drop for every current model.

The useful question is smaller: can the model still find the facts, decisions, and instructions that matter for this task?

When a thread gets unwieldy, I would ask for a handoff containing the goal, decisions already made, constraints, unresolved questions, and next action. Then start a focused conversation with that summary.

Keep the original material available when exact details matter. A summary can lose information too.

The aim is not to restart on a timer. It is to carry forward the useful state deliberately, instead of treating the full history as the only way to preserve it.
