Start Simple, Finish Like a Pro: A Prompting Workflow
A prompt does not need to be a giant block of instructions before you can get a useful first response. I like the simple approach in this video: treat the AI like a capable intern who needs a clear task, then guide it based on what it actually produces.
Start by naming the job and the result you want. If you want a social post, say that plainly and give it the topic. Read the first draft before adding more. Is the format wrong? Fix the format. Does it sound generic? Give a specific example of the voice you want. Is the opening weak? Explain what kind of opening would fit.
Build the prompt from real feedback
Try this loop: give a short, concrete instruction; identify the biggest mismatch; add one useful constraint or example; try again; then edit the final result yourself.
The key is to respond to the actual draft rather than guessing every possible requirement in advance. A sample of your writing can communicate tone more clearly than a vague request to sound authentic. A format example can do the same for structure.
This does not make the AI a substitute for your judgment. The video leaves room for the human finishing pass: check the result, decide what feels right, and revise the details that matter. Save prompts that help, note what changed the output, and reuse them when a similar task comes up.
If prompting feels like a test you can fail, try treating it as a conversation with an eager assistant. Begin with the simplest request and improve it one observation at a time.
